About Peachtree City, Georgia
A planned community in Fayette County, known for its villages, lakes, and 100+ miles of shared-use paths for walkers, cyclists, and golf carts.
History: A Planned City Since 1959
In the 1950s a group of real estate developers put together more than 12,000 acres in Fayette County to build a planned community. Peachtree City was chartered on March 9, 1959. Joel H. Cowan, who planned the community while he was a Georgia Tech student, is credited with founding the city and was its first mayor (1959–1963).
The original plan called for 80,000 to 110,000 residents. In 1985 the city revised its plan to a full build-out of about 45,000 residents.
The Villages
The city was planned as a set of villages, each with its own shopping areas, recreation facilities, and elementary schools. Today’s villages are:
- Aberdeen
- Braelinn
- Glenloch
- Kedron
- Wilksmoor
The Golf Cart Path System
The city’s best-known feature is its 100+ mile network of shared-use paths for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorized carts. The paths connect neighborhoods, shopping centers, places of worship, office and medical parks, schools, recreation centers, and lakes. Carts must be registered with the city. See our Golf Carts guide.
Lakes
- Lake Peachtree: Drake Field, next to City Hall and the library, sits on its shore. Lake use is for Peachtree City residents only, and only non-motorized boats may launch there.
- Lake Kedron: a 235-acre reservoir managed by the Fayette County Water System. Fishing and boating are allowed, but gas- or alcohol-powered boats and swimming are not.
- Lake McIntosh: a 650-acre reservoir on Line Creek, managed by the Fayette County Water System. Public access is through Lake McIntosh Park, 3501 TDK Blvd., Peachtree City. Gas- or alcohol-powered boats and swimming are not allowed.
